Hola everyone!

Sorry for the delay, I've put off doing this for absolutely no reason at all other than utter laziness. From here on out I'm going to try to be more of top of these and offer more content and reflection than before. I'm feeling exceptionally inspired tonight and want to ride out this motivation as long as I can. I have also decided to make a new Instagram to only post pictures of my trip, it'll include food, places, and my experiences. This is a way for me to get a little creative and share pics with those who want to see more details, follow along @livewithlan. So now that I've rambled on a bit, let's go to story time!

Last week I had the opportunity to attend a once in a lifetime event here in Montevideo called, Desfile de Llamadas, or as the locals here call it, Llamadas. Now, for the people here in Uruguay the event may not be what you would consider once in a lifetime but that didn't stop them from enjoying it like it was their first and last.

Desfile de Llamadas is a part of the longest Carnaval celebration in the world that is celebrated right here in Montevideo. Carnaval itself consists of many events over multiple months to remember and celebrate the slaves, their culture, and the abolition of slavery in Uruguay. On top of desfile, other popular events that are associated with Carnaval in Uruguay are Murga and Parodistas. Both events are very theatrical and are definitely on my list of things to do before I leave.

Llamadas features dancers in glamorous costumes, floats, and groups of drummers called comparsas who play candombe. Candome is extremely popular in Uruguayan culture. A group of friends and I had the chance to meet some candombe players who said they've been playing since for as long as they can remember. The drums are so loud and powerful during the parade you can literally feel it in your chest. It made it impossible not to dance along. All of these elements combined made for a great first experience at a Carnaval celebration. I had the opportunity to attend all 3 days (Llamadas is usually 2 days long but due to rain we got a bit of an extra showing :)) and even though they were basically the same, I enjoyed it more and more each time. I've attached some pretty cool pictures and videos for you all to enjoy, it doesn't do it justice but until you take the time to experience it for yourself here it is!

Having the opportunity to experience all of the culture and knowledge this country has to offer makes me realize that I am an ant compared to this world. I am so small and know so little BUT I have the opportunity to grow and learn more. I want to grow and learn more, I want to see the beauty and experiences this world has to offer. Sometimes I get discouraged by how little I know about this world and what is has to offer but I think realizing how much I can see and do, is the first step to getting there. It's only been a little over 3 weeks here and I already want to start planning my next trip. I have officially gotten the travel bug.

Until next time,

LeAnne
